Your appetite should go back to normal when you stop taking steroids. If you are worried about gaining weight, talk to your doctor or nurse. Steroids can increase your blood pressure (hypertension), which can lead to headaches and dizziness. You should have regular blood pressure checks while you are taking steroids – ask your medical team for advice.

Avoid injecting into other muscles – this increases your risk of problems like nerve damage, which can affect your training. Bear in mind that steroids work on your whole body, not just the area you’re injecting into. Effects on other treatments

You might have a burning or tingling sensation around your bottom during a steroid injection into a vein (intravenous). Your nurse will give the injection slowly to try and prevent this. Talk to your nurse or your dietitian about how to safely control your weight.

General advice on short-term steroid treatments

If you feel unwell or need advice, you can call them at any time of the day or night. You may get some of the side effects we mention, but you are unlikely to get all of them. Are there any reasons why I won’t be prescribed steroids?

Your doctor may check your general condition such as height, weight, blood pressure and sugar levels. You should let your dentist know you are on steroids if you are having dental treatment. HIV drugs – steroids and some HIV drugs both raise levels of cholesterol (fat in the blood), so if you’re being treated for HIV you should be careful about using muscle-building drugs. A doctor should check your cholesterol levels as taking steroids when on HIV drugs puts extra strain on your liver.

However, you should avoid handling steroids if you are pregnant or suspect that you may be pregnant. Steroids are one of the most effective drugs to treat immune-mediated and inflammatory diseases. However, there are some side effects that your vet will try to minimise. These range from being merely somewhat troublesome, through to some which are potentially very significant.

It is also possible that a topical steroid could irritate your skin or cause an allergic reaction. If this happens, you will be given a different type of topical steroid treatment.
